Puppet / Joy Fielding

Random House
December 2005
ISBN: 0-7704-2958-0 (pbk)

If you are rushing around in the final shopping days before Christmas don't forget books. This brand new title is perfect for those women on your list who read mysteries. It is also the perfect read to curl up in front of the fireplace with when you just want to escape the Christmas chaos.

Fielding had me hooked from her opening paragraphs.

"Some of the things Amanda Travis likes: the color black; lunchtime spinning classes at the fitness centre on Clematis Street in downtown Palm Beach; her all-white, one-bedroom, oceanfront condo in Jupiter; a compliant jury; men whose wives don't understand them.

Some of the things she doesn't: the colour pink; when the temperature outside her condo's floor-to-ceiling windows falls below sixty-five degrees; clients who don't follow her advice; the color gray; being asked to show her ID when she goes to a bar; nicknames of any shape and size.

Something else she doesn't like: bit marks."

Amanda Travis is an intriguing character, who is as much a mystery as the murder at the centre of the plot line. In fact, it was Amanda who held my interest throughout the book. Her use of men as disposable, interchangeable sex partners; her rejection of intimacy; her Canadian roots and her ex-husbands, both “good men” she has abandoned, fascinated me.

Wishing you all happy holidays and happy reading!
