Mandela : the rebel who led his nation to freedom begins with Mandela's birth in 1918 as the son of a Thembu chief and follows him through his school years, his political ventures, imprisonment, release, presidency, Nobel Peace Prize, and retirement.

This book is filled with colourful images of South Africa and its' people and scattered with "fast facts" about Mandela, his struggles and the issues surrounding colonial rule. Along the bottom of each page is a timeline of political highlights from 1910 when the Union of South Africa was formed to 2004 when Nelson Mandela retired from public life.
