Being caribou / Karsten Heuer

For more than 1000 miles, Karsten Heuer and his wife, Leanne Allison, joined the Porcupine caribou herd as it migrated from its Yukon winter range to its endangered Alaskan calving grounds in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. They tracked the caribou over four mountain ranges, hundreds of passes and dozens of rivers. To keep up, they knew they would have to move, act and even think like caribou without a plan, schedule or objective other than to stay with the wild herd. They came face to face with wolves, grizzly bears, mosquitoes and blizzards. They ultimately discovered the roots of human instinct and how the power of wild landscapes and wild animals can release them from layers of technology and advertising that bury them in the modern world.
