Public education, public pride : the centennial history of the British Columbia School Trustees Association / James B. London.
Public education public pride tracks the history of the oldest trustee association in
Canada from its first meeting of one female and 19 male BC school trustees in the
Vancouver School Board offices in 1905 to today, when it represents 58 of BC’s 60
school boards, including 97 per cent of the total public school population.
Through personal interviews and meticulous archival research, London has created
a lively, exhaustive and illuminating history not only of BCSTA but of BC’s public
education system. School trustees, of course, do not work in isolation and London’s
book clearly displays the links between school trustees’ and BCSTA’s work on behalf
of public education and the contributions by the Ministry of Education and other
education partners in the province.
Public education public pride is an essential guide to the evolution of public education
in BC, with a focus on school trustees’ role in that history.
